Photometric Variability of the T2.5 Brown Dwarf Simp J013656.5+093347; Evidence for Evolving Weather Patterns
We report the discovery of a photometric variability in the bright T2.5 brown dwarf SIMP J013656.57+093347.3. Continuous J-band photometry has been obtained for several hours on four different nights. The light curves show a periodic modulation with a period of ∼2.4 hours, a peak-to-peak amplitude of ∼ 50 mmag and significant night-to-night evolution. We suggest that the light curve modulation ...
متن کاملPeriodic photometric variability of the brown dwarf Kelu - 1
We have detected a strong periodicity of 1.80±0.05 hours in photometric observations of the brown dwarf Kelu-1. The peak-to-peak amplitude of the variation is ∼1.1% (11.9±0.8 mmag) in a 41nm wide filter centred on 857nm and including the dust/temperature sensitive TiO & CrH bands. We have identified two plausible causes of variability: surface features rotating into-and out-of-view and so modul...
متن کاملPhotometric variability of a young, low-mass brown dwarf
We report differential I-band and J-band photometry of S Ori 45, a cool (spectral type M8.5), young (1–8 Myr) brown dwarf of the σOrionis cluster with a likely mass estimated at around 20 times the mass of Jupiter. We detect variability (amplitudes ranging from 34 to 81 mmag) and observe a modulation at a period of 2.5–3.6 h in both optical and near-infrared light curves. The most recent optica...
متن کاملEvidence for Accretion in a Nearby, Young Brown Dwarf
We report on the discovery of the young, nearby, brown dwarf 2MASS J0041353−562112. The object has a spectral type of M7.5, it shows Li absorption and signatures of accretion, which implies that it still has a disk and suggests an age below 10Myr. The space motion vector and position on the sky indicate that the brown dwarf is probably a member of the ∼20Myr old Tuc-Hor association, or that it ...
متن کاملThe Brown Dwarf - Exoplanet Connection
Brown dwarfs are commonly regarded as easily-observed templates for exoplanet studies, with comparable masses, physical sizes and atmospheric properties. There is indeed considerable overlap in the photospheric temperatures of the coldest brown dwarfs (spectral classes L and T) and the hottest exoplanets. However, the properties and processes associated with brown dwarf and exoplanet atmosphere...
